Does your current massage therapist treat the muscle pictured here?
If they do not, please ask them what their reason is for avoiding it. Many therapists aren’t aware of how important it is and most haven’t gotten the additional education they need to feel confident treating the front of the neck.
The muscle in this picture is called the SCM (sternocleidomastoid). It is one of the top headache referrers and is a must-treat muscle for almost every client who has migraines or headaches. This muscle can also create other symptoms in some people such as difficulty swallowing, facial and jaw pain, and for some, even dizziness, nausea (without vomiting), a foggy feeling, and blurry vision.
As a licensed massage therapist in the Bradenton, Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch area of Florida, I have specialized in treating headaches, neck pain, and TMJ dysfunction for over 13 years. Not only do I assess and treat this muscle, I teach you how to address it yourself so you can do so yourself. Giving you the tools you need to carry your healing forward between sessions is one of the many things i do differently than other neuromuscular therapists.
If you want to keep your current licensed massage therapist instead of switching to Lakewood Ranch Medical Massage, I can help with that too. In addition to teaching at the Sarasota School of Massage Therapy, I work one-on-one with therapists who want to learn specific skills. You and your therapist can come in together for a lesson. They get new skills and you get to stay with the therapist you already like and trust.
